Medical terminology can be quite intimidating and confusing, even for people in the field. Moreover, add to it the authoritative manner of many doctors and the end result could be overwhelmed people who really don't express their concerns before agreeing to take certain medications or have a particular procedure or surgery, or, even worse, run and neglect their health altogether.Yet, with a better understanding of the basics of medical terminology, we would be empowered to take a more proactive part in our health overall. These Greek (and Latin) based root words, prefixes, and suffixes come together to construct a coherent system of medical terms. For instance, Osteoarthritis is broken down into three parts: 1. Osteo (Bone) + 2. arthro (Joint) and 3. itis ( Inflammation). So then Osteoarthritis can basically be called pain in the joints of the bones. Once you realize that these complex words are “just an assembly of smaller components, then building a medical vocabulary becomes much easier.” – Gregory Dowd This Guide was written to medical students but we felt that it was so “plainly” written and graphed that it would be a help to all. Obviously, this does not automatically cause us to overcome lack of knowledge concerning our bodies, health issues, and various diseases but to be empowered to face the establishment is more than worth it. The importance of fluency in medical terminology, which applies to all hospital personnel, including allied health care professionals, cannot be overstated. Although it seems scary at first glance, medical terminology is not rocket science. The best way to learn medical terminology is to become familiar with the structure and the most commonly used components.
