Eating vegetables is well known to be a huge part of a healthy lifestyle. Yet, cruciferous vegetables are especially potent and well documented protectors against cancer, heart disease and stroke among other diseases and ailments. The most notable members of the cruciferous family include vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, radishes, turnips, kale (my favorite), collards, and mustard greens. The term “cruciferous” comes from the Latin word crux or “cross” referring to the four-petal flowers shape that grow from each of these vegetable plants. Could this divine design be speaking to us about their potency? This is very possible. In future posts we will be discussing the “doctrine of signatures” which is a belief that the shape, color, and other aspects of fruit and vegetables reveal their hidden health applications and benefits. So the question could then arise that if it were possible that the sign of the cross in nature could reveal medicinal health superiority, could this also equate as a spiritual revelation of the cross of Christ? I would not rush to make this conclusion. One reason would be that the cross was already in use, in one form or another, as a sacred symbol among the Chaldeans, the Phoenicians, the Egyptians, and many other nations before the crucifixion of Christ (Davis Dictionary of the Bible). Even after the crucifixion, it still did not become the symbol that we know today until the reign of Constantine the Great some 300 years later. Yet another key reason why I would not relate this healthy cross found in nature to the cross of Christ would be that the traditionally accepted shape of “the cross” may not necessarily be the historic. This is not said to enter into a debate about the actual shape of the cross of Christ but to point out the fact that that the Biblical word interpreted as cross is from the Greek word “starous” which literally means stake or post as an instrument of capital punishment, or figuratively, exposure to death or self-denial. So then the emphasis was put on its use and meaning but not necessarily its shape. This same emphasis is also seen in other words derived from crux as in “crucial decisions” or “excruciating pain”. Nevertheless, the potency and health benefits of Cruciferous vegetables cannot be denied, and the divinely rendered design that identifies them is still just as impressive. All glory to the Father in thanksgiving for the grace available through finished work of His Son. Links below may provide further study of subjects mentioned in this post.
