Digestion, Bromelain, and the Big Meal

It is a common belief that the tryptophan in turkey makes one sleepy after a meal and it certainly can have that affect. Yet, above that it is the body's way of shutting down so that it can concentrate its energy in digesting heavier meals and stop us from eating more during this process (A lot like when someone consumes too much alcohol and passes out).

Many overlook just how much energy and enzyme production goes into metabolizing a meal (break-down, transport, absorb, store) especially those meals heavy with proteins and fats. Studies show digestion accounts for 5 – 10 percent of the total energy expended daily (thermic affect of food). Without question the body reacts better to smaller meals eaten more frequently… but we know that’s not the way it works around the holidays.

Bromelain is an enzyme that is found primarily in the center post core of pineapples that is a great natural digestive aid (among other things). It specifically breaks down meats and other proteins. Fresh pineapple juice (or bromelain in supplement form) with your meal can assist proper digestion and also may help with the bloated feeling that can follow a big meal. Indirectly, this helps the body deal with fat. Since the bromelain is working on the protein more of your body's metabolism can attack and remove the fat with less storage. This could be something else to be thankful for.
